AI Engineer – Remote - Contract based

In this role, you will:

Work on backend engineering workstreams for customer deployments, from architecture through production readiness.
Build LLM-powered applications, agents, workflow tools, APIs, retrieval systems, and automation pipelines.
Design reliable backend systems using Python, SQL, databases, queues, background jobs, cloud services, and observability tools.
Integrate AI systems with customer tools, data sources, internal workflows, and business rules.
Prototype quickly, then turn successful prototypes into robust, reusable implementation patterns.
Own production quality, including testing, evaluation, monitoring, security, reliability, and failure handling.
Work directly with customer technical teams and business stakeholders to understand workflows and translate them into working systems.
Review architecture, code, tradeoffs, deployment assumptions, and operational risks.
Help define evaluation and monitoring approaches for LLM systems, including accuracy, reliability, safety, latency, and cost.
Identify reusable engineering patterns from customer deployments and help turn them into reference architectures.

You may thrive in this role if you:

Have strong backend engineering experience building production applications, APIs, microservices, data pipelines, and cloud-based systems.
Are highly capable with Python and SQL, and comfortable working across databases, APIs, queues, containers, and cloud infrastructure.
Understand production infrastructure: deployment, logging, monitoring, CI/CD, security, access control, scalability, and reliability.
Have hands-on experience building with LLMs, agents, retrieval, prompt engineering, model APIs, and evaluation workflows.
Can take an ambiguous customer problem and turn it into a practical technical design.
Are comfortable being a hands-on player-coach: writing code, reviewing designs, mentoring others, and owning delivery quality.
Can balance speed and engineering discipline, knowing when to prototype and when to harden.
Communicate clearly with founders, engineers, customer teams, product stakeholders, and non-technical decision-makers.
Make thoughtful standardization-versus-customization decisions instead of defaulting to one-off bespoke solutions.
Stay calm under messy deployment conditions and convert lessons into reusable engineering patterns.
